Artist Statement: My artistic work encompasses abstraction and representation, and emerges out of a personal exploration of femininity, cultural identity, and nature. This exploration is represented through painting/drawing, analog photography, and bronze sculpture. I dichotomize the two-dimensionality and colour of my painting and photography, and the three-dimensionality and form of my sculpture. At times, I unify the mediums by creating dialogues among them. With my painting work, I utilize colour, composition, texture, and intuitive gesture to instil feelings of both calm and excitement. My photography derives a comparable colour palette, matching scenes from the world with the qualities imbued in my painting. In employing bronze as a sculptural material, I ‘immortalize’ forms derived from organic, and correspondingly ephemeral, entities. As well with my sculpture work, I eliminate colour and apply volume to abstract marks borrowed from my paintings. Limiting colour and form, an aesthetic composed of both simplicity and complexity is produced.
