May 2 - 13 | Peter Friedrichsen: Instances of Reflected Light [North Gallery]

Up Close Art Exhibition

May 2 - 13 | Peter Friedrichsen: Instances of Reflected Light
Opening Reception: Saturday May 5th, 2-5PM

Photographic abstractions on metal and wood.

The traditional photograph as a visual capture of time provides the basis for my work. Captured images are transformed through an alternative hand-printing process, creating elements of abstraction. Reflective surfaces and textures are selected to imbue a dynamic aesthetic, giving life to the imagery. It is the interplay of the photorealistic and abstract elements that create surprise and perhaps a new appreciation of the subject as seen in a different light.

Rural Ontario
In my capture of rural landscape imagery, I isolate and simplify subjects through the use of colour, texture, and reflectivity. Tree lines, wetlands, light, and water are the basic elements of focus.

Ghost signs in Urban Toronto
These historical advertising banners continue to fade into Toronto’s history. Through the use of multiple pigment layers and reflective aluminum, the imagery is intensified and brought to the forefront.

Iceland
Iceland’s abundance of water and monochromatic skies informed my choice of the cyanotype process, lending blue tones to these natural elements
Special thanks to our community partners and on-going sponsors.
