Artist Statement: In my recent travels touring with a Cirque Du Soleil show I have had the opportunity to observe performers in the contemporary lifestyle of a traditional circus. I aim to capture the physical likeness of the performer and the uniqueness of the individual as a professional circus clown.
The travelling show is based around the original circus esthetic. With traditional clown costume and makeup present, this aspect has become predominate in my work. I convey clarity and honesty to the portrait, while the viewer is invited to appreciate the fundamentals of the character, I look beyond the show makeup at the human condition with empathy to the personal connection I have with each performer I paint. The evident slowness in my paintings offer acknowledgment of the attention paid to the layering of information with its brush strokes, built-up levels of paint, and its complexly mixed colours bringing the painting to life.
