Kate Maura

Kate Maura was raised in Toronto and enjoyed a decade long career in business  after graduating with an MBA from SchulichAfter having her third child Kate changed course and focused full-time on raising them, living in both Ontario and Alberta. In Alberta, she began taking art classes in a college certificate program, and encouraged to apply to art school, moved back to Toronto in 2016 to attend OCADu. Kate  graduated with Distinction in 2019 with a BFA in the Drawing and Painting program, and won the juried award for the MacKenzie Investments placement of her work and achieved the OCADU juried Project 31 award.  Excited by the possibilities of art, she believes that creativity is the very essence of our growth as an individual.

Artist Statement:
The process starts with nature, having spent time canoe tripping in Algonquin Park and Quetico Park with Taylor Statten Camps as a youth. Her recent series has been evolving over the past year since her thesis in 2019.  Kate met a Rapids Clubtail dragonfly while drawing plein air which began her fascination with this creature.
The dragonfly has lived on this planet for almost 350 million years and is a metaphor of transformation and self-realization across many cultures.  Kate creates a stylized visual language of imagined transformations. Using the Procreate software on an iPad, Kate collages and distorts images of biological wings, sometimes poetry or text and hand drawings of human figures using both traditional and contemporary ways of making.  We are only a part of a greater mystery and hopes her work can provide a space to consider that change is certain and how we engage with understanding ourselves and who we really are, can give us a chance to move toward a better future.
Customized works can be created from the same images in different sizes, and printed on both canvas or paper.  Contact the artist directly at katemkilty@gmail.com or DM through her sites below.
