Jane Cousens is Toronto-based artist dedicated to encaustic mixed media painting and printmaking. After completing a graduate school at Queen’s University in Kingston, she studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Now, following a decades long career in the public service, she is devoting herself to encaustic painting and teaching yoga. Her paintings have shown at the Propeller Gallery in Toronto and the Hive Gallery in Alton Mills, Ontario.
Artist Statement: These two pieces emerged out of the materials. They were created using melted wax and encaustic paints for the mono print on Japanese paper. The figures were then drawn on the cooled wax surface with all pencil and shaded with pan pastels. There was something in the way the hot wax colours melted into each other that called for the fluid movement of the dancer to move across the surface. She – the dancer was already looking inward – in a moment of sadness in Dancer I, and then in a kind of vibrant energy, in Dancer II
