Isabella Francesco

Artist's Statement

band rock
, the most recent series in the ROCKS IN MY HEAD body of work, is a creative inquiry that began with a small found stone. As well as having visual appeal, this tiny piece of the planet serves as a symbol of the recurring and interrelated themes of memory, the passage of time and the process of transformation.
These mixed-media drawings playfully make apparent a relationship between nature's ancient patterns in earth and water and the iconic designs that came into fashion during the transformative 60s and 70s - a period in the relatively recent past. As the drawings evolved, the series developed a direction of its own. The individual pieces began to identify by colour and feeling with one season or another - further enhancing the expression of changes that occur as time passes.

In essence, this series of works tries on a variety of ways in seeing and expressing how parts are connected to the whole, in seeing how all of the parts are ultimately connected in some way.

The mixed-media include chalk pastel, graphite and stitched on layers of mylar and paper.

Biography

In 1992 I graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in General Studies. Courses such as paper and mould-making, photography, metal work, environmental design, experimental drawing and performance art have proved to be a solid foundation in developing confidence in materials exploration and critical, creative thinking.
To support my art making habit I have worked at just about everything including landscape gardening, waitressing, sewing theatrical costumes and selling advertising for a magazine. I taught sculpture at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre for eight years and in the schools with the Summer Studio and Artists in the Schools programs.
My artwork has been shown in several galleries in Toronto including York Quay, A Space, Papermill, Propeller, John B. Aird and in the Bridgepoint Health Corporate Installation. At the American Museum of Quilts and Textiles in San Jose, California I exhibited an 8 x 6 foot sculptural paper quilt. I have participated in The Artist Project, the Riverdale Art Walk (RAW) and Art Walk North.
