Roots & Ruins
Frances Patella

March 6 - 24, 2019

Opening Reception: Saturday March 9, 2 - 5 pm
Artists’ Talk: Sunday March 24, 2 - 4 pm > Video of Frances Patella's Artist Talk

Roots & Ruins - Frances Patella
Original from a postcard of a painting by Thomas Cole, Mount Etna from Taormina, 1843. Digital photograph and paint, 2019, 16 x 21 inches
Born in Italy, Toronto based Frances Patella’s work explores time, transience and transformation in the landscape.  Patella incorporates paint and analogue photography, including double exposures, and uses images of ruins to suggest a temporal aspect to the representation of Pompeii, Taormina and Stonehenge.  Patella’s work establishes a visual timeline, linking and interweaving multiple temporalities and perspectives.

She studied Visual Arts at the University of Western Ontario with painter Paterson Ewen and in Florence Italy through the University of Windsor. Frances holds a BFA from York University and a B.ED from the University of Toronto. Frances apprenticed with multimedia artist Noel Harding and was Joyce Wieland’s Arts Administrator. Frances’ work has been exhibited in solo, juried, group exhibitions and art fairs including Art Toronto. She has received mid-career grants from the Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils, Best In Show and Purchase Awards.
