Artist Statement: (Re)Cover focuses on the emotional and affective qualities of personal experience as a way to understand the body and the self. In conversation with affect theory, this work revisits and (re)imagines affective events through intimate and visceral (re)creations. My work begins with personal, confessional sketches grounded in memory, then attempts to (re)create them through large, relatable, and confrontational paintings. These paintings straddle the line between desire and shame, beauty and the grotesque, purity and disorder to explore the transformational potential of affect. This work draws on personal memories to examine how affective energies are both produced by, and productive of, the self. Affect is experienced outside of language as an embodied intensity, but through the use of vibrant colours, entangled bodies, and discordant imagery, (Re)Cover seeks to construct a visual language to (re)cover and (re)present its energy.
